Meritocracy:
The idea that individuals are selected and ranked competitively according to academic merit is the fundamental principle underlying the educational system in any society today, despite its deceptive function in converting social and cultural heritage into academic heritage, and diverting attention from social inequality to an inequality in the academic ability of individuals.
